A Little History!

The Milwaukee Public Library was built in 1895. This happens to be the third location of the library. This library building also used to house the Milwaukee Museum. The architect for this library was Ferry and Clas who won a contest to design this building. There were over 70 entries, including Frank Lloyd Wright. The building cost $780,00o to build! There is a statue of Ben Franklin in the entry way to the library, he is the Father of Libraries, because he founded the first lending library in 1731.
The Milwaukee public library began with 10,000 donated books from the Young Men's Association of Milwaukee, over half of which were in German! Today the library holds 3,030,281 materials.
